Installing Modkit for VEX

Windows Installation

  1. Before you get started using your VEX IQ with Modkit, you will need to install Modkit Link to communicate with your VEX device. You can download Modkit Link from the bottom of the page http://www.modkit.com/vex.
  2. After you have downloaded Modkit Link, depending on the browser you are using, you may be given an option to Run the file. If this option appears, then click Run. If there is no option, then navigate to the downloaded file (Modkit_Link_2014_10_03.exe). and double click on the file to launch installation.
  3. After you have launched the Modkit Link installation, you will see the main installation screen. To begin the installation process, press the Install button in the lower right corner of the screen.
  4. You will be asked if you want to allow Modkit Link to make changes to the system (because Modkit Link is being added to your Program Files). Select Yes to continue with the installation process.
  5. A progress bar will appear on the screen indicating the progress of the installation. When the bar turns completely green, your installation will be complete. You may see a few Windows Security Alerts along the way. The first is to install the VEX software itself. Click Install to install the VEX driver software. You may also choose to check 'Always trust software from VEX Robotics Inc' to avoid popups and skip future verification for software from VEX.
  6. If you leave the 'Always trust software from VEX Robotics Inc' box unchecked, then you will receive more popups before installation is complete. The first popup will be for setting up the ports for the VEX drivers. Click Install to ensure that your VEX functions properly with your computer. The second popup you will receive is for Modkit Link itself. At this step, make sure to check Private Networks and Public Networks to ensure that Modkit Link will be able to communicate in all locations, and then press Allow Access.
  7. After you finish the installation, you will see a screen indicating that the setup process has been completed, and you are now ready to run Modkit Link!
  8. After the installation process has been completed, you should see a new shortcut to the Modkit Link application on your desktop. To run the application, double click on this shortcut icon, and you should see a small Modkit Link icon appear in the task bar to indicate that Modkit Link is running.

Troubleshooting:

If you launch the Modkit for VEX editor using an old version of Modkit Link, you will see the following screen:

  1. The first option (I'm using Link version 2014.05.28) will allow you to continue to use the older Modkit Link version and to launch the accompanying previous version of Modkit for VEX.
  2. The second option (Modkit Link isn't installed, help me install it) launches the latest Modkit Link installation so that you can use the newest version of Modkit for VEX.
  3. The third option (Continue without Modkit Link) lets you preview and use the Modkit for VEX editor. However, without the Modkit Link, you will not be able to download programs to the robot brain.
