An Introduction to Modkit Micro

What is Modkit Micro?

Modkit Micro is a drag-and-drop programming environment. It’s intended for kids, artists, inventors, designers, educators, and non-programmers to make interactive electronics projects without the obstacles of traditional programming. Use Modkit Micro to program a number of microcontroller boards.

Why Modkit Micro?

There are many graphical programming environments. Flowol, Ardublock, Scratch for Arduino (S4A) and others offer similar interactions. All of these tools take the messy details of programming and wrap it up in an easy-to-use package. Modkit also simplifies the process of programming behaviors but for physical things and offers some more advantages over other systems for kids, artists, inventors, and other interested groups:

DRAG-AND-DROP

The Modkit environment makes programming for physical things as easy as dragging and dropping little code blocks. It is heavily inspired by the Scratch programming environment (from MIT Media Lab’s Lifelong Kindergarten Group), so students learning to program in that environment will be familiar with the look and feel of Modkit.

BROWSER-BASED, CROSS-PLATFORM

The Modkit environment runs directly in your web browser. Modkit also has desktop versions available for purchase that run on Windows and Macintosh OS X. Most programming environments are limited to your desktop and most microcontroller programming environments are limited to Windows.
